Snapshot: Tarictic Hornbill
I’ve previously shown some of the mammals that are native members of the Philippine fauna. But probably the most conspicuous elements are the birds. It’s a very large and diverse assemblage. Take this Tarictic Hornbill (Penelopides samarensis) that I grabbed a … Continue reading
Snapshot: Banza
At our Manoa Cliff restoration site, there is still some diversity with the native arthropods. While my entomology skills are lacking, we were lucky to have guests today more familiar with our Hawaiian insects. Here is one of the native … Continue reading
Feral birds at the Honolulu Zoo
Watching the bird life at the Honolulu Zoo is an interesting thing. Certainly the zoo’s collection of birds is quite impressive. But from an urban birder’s perspective, the zoo is interesting in another way. Simply put, the zoo’s feral bird … Continue reading
Snapshot: Christmas at the Zoo
Every year, I try to make it to the “Christmas at the Zoo” event here at the Honolulu Zoo. It always makes for interesting shots like this one. As discombobulating as seeing a Chimp drinking heartily from a Gatorade bottle … Continue reading
Snapshot: Philippine Tarsier
There’s nothing like quirky endemic fauna. Here is a picture I took in Bohol of Philippine Tarsiers (Tarsius syrichta). If you love phylogeny (and who doesn’t?), tarsiers have been found to be more closely related to monkeys and great apes … Continue reading
Snapshot: Native Tantalus tree snails
One nice thing about hiking on cool cloudy days is that it give you a better chance to see native snails. This little guy is an Auricullela minuta/perpusilla cruising around on a Cyrtandra grandiflora. There were even some on invasive … Continue reading
O’ahu tree snails in the Wai’anaes
Here are some pictures I took of Achatinella mustelina, a rare endemic snail found only in the Wai’anae range.
Honolulu Zoo: Dramatis Personae
I love, love, love the zoo. Now, I know there are a lot of valid critiques out there about zoos, but my view is that zoos help create meaningful passion in people.

Breeding season at Ka’ena Point
Each winter, Laysan Albatross (Phoebastria immutabilis) come to Ka’ena Point on O’ahu to mate and breed.
